If you’ve driven or walked down Main Street in Newark over the past several months, you’ve certainly noticed the scaffolding and netting surrounding one of its most recognizable buildings at the corner of 124 E Main Street / 10 Center Street. We understand the curiosity, and appreciate the patience, from our tenants, neighbors, and the broader community as work continues on this highly visible redevelopment.
This project represents a significant investment in the future of downtown Newark. Approved by City Council in July 2025, the redevelopment is designed to preserve the character of this iconic location while modernizing the space to better serve today’s residents, businesses, and visitors.
Progress and Timeline
Construction is actively underway, and we’re excited to share that the upgraded residential apartments will be ready for occupancy in time for the Fall 2026 term. The project includes a substantial expansion, increasing the number of apartment homes from 14 to 37, along with fully modernized interiors designed to meet current market demand.
On the ground floor, the prominent retail space, formerly home to Walgreens, is being reimagined and upgraded to accommodate a new commercial tenant. While a lease has not yet been finalized, there are strong prospects and ongoing discussions with interested parties. We are committed to securing a tenant that complements Main Street’s vibrant retail environment.
What This Means for Main Street
Beyond the construction fencing, this project is about long-term value for Newark’s downtown. Once complete, Center Square will deliver both aesthetic and functional improvements that benefit the entire corridor.
The refreshed exterior façade will align with the evolving architectural style of Main Street, blending seamlessly with both historic buildings and newer developments nearby. At the same time, the addition of new residential units will bring increased foot traffic, energy, and economic activity to one of Newark’s most important commercial corridors.
For nearby businesses, including several Lang Development Group tenants, this means more potential customers, more consistent activity throughout the day, and a stronger overall downtown ecosystem.
Looking Ahead
We recognize that construction can be disruptive, especially in such a central location, but the end result will be well worth it. Center Square is designed to support Newark’s continued growth by providing high-quality housing, revitalized retail space, and a meaningful contribution to the city’s tax base and infrastructure.
We appreciate the continued support from our tenants, neighbors, and the Newark community, and you can visit our website for more updates as the project progresses toward completion.
